Cambrex Bio Science Shawn Cavanagh, Vice President, BioProducts Wins Maryland International Leadership Award

Baltimore, March 11, 2005 – Shawn Cavanagh, Vice President of BioProducts at Cambrex Bio Science was selected as a winner of Maryland's 2005 International Business Leadership Awards.  The award is presented to an individual within a Maryland company who has led their company to new global heights, demonstrating an entrepreneurial spirit, determination, creativity and the cultural sensitivity that global business demands.

Cambrex Bio Science is a wholly owned subsidiary of the global Cambrex Corporation, an innovative life sciences company with total gross sales of over $450 Million. Bioproducts account for nearly 30% of Cambrex sales, and is the fastest growing business unit at Cambrex.  Headquartered in Walkersville, MD Cambrex Bio Science bioproducts division focuses on providing innovative products and services for bioresearch, cell therapeutics and pharmaceutical testing. Products include serum-free liquid media, cell cultures, endotoxin detection, and products for the separation and sequencing of DNA.

Mr. Cavanagh and his team have been instrumental in the growth of Cambrex bioproducts.  Cavanagh oversees 432 employees and a business unit of nearly $150 million in revenues, with almost half of his revenues coming from international. Key growth markets for Cambrex bioproducts have been largely European driven, though recently established subsidiaries in Australia, Brazil and India bode well for these markets in the future.  Cavanagh has worked closely with both the Export Assistance Center and the International Offices of the State of Maryland, particularly helpful in the early days of the Brazilian subsidiary work.

Cavanagh's business unit has recorded double-digit growth for the past two years, and is currently exceeding goals for 2005.  Cavanagh has been critical in bringing leadership, developing strategy and fueling the energy needed to elevate performance in all areas of his business.   Other notable accomplishments include negotiations that led to the successful acquisition of Delta Services in Mumbai, India, allowing Cambrex to sell directly into India, realizing additional revenues and cost savings.  Looking at the future, Cavanagh estimates international will record growth rates of 30% or more, with key future growth markets anticipated in China, Singapore, Malaysia and beyond.

Cavanagh originally hails from Portsmouth, New Hampshire.   He earned his BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of New Hampshire, and spent time working towards an MBA at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte.  He subscribes to a coaching-style leadership and feels that he is most effective in empowering people.

Cavanagh is married with three children. He enjoys coaching football, basketball and baseball for his children’s teams.  He is also involved in his local church and an active member of the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education.
