Governor Ehrlich to Honor James T. Brady with the Governor’s Leadership Award

Baltimore, March 9, 2005 –Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. will honor James T. Brady, Managing Director Mid-Atlantic of Ballantrae International, Ltd with the Governor’s Leadership Award during Maryland’s 9th Annual International Business Leadership Awards celebration.  The World Trade Center Institute, the Department of Business and Economic Development and Phillips Foods will host this event at the James Rouse Visionary Center, a part of the American Visionary Arts Museum, on Wednesday, March 30, 2005. The Governor’s Leadership Award is presented annually to a person who exemplifies dedication, vision and leadership in support of Maryland’s international relations.

This year’s award winner, James T. Brady, has demonstrated a long-standing history of exceptional commitment to Maryland and to the international community.
Mr. Brady serves as a member of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Audit Committee of Constellation Energy Group, McCormick & Company, Inc., Aether Systems, Inc., T. Rowe Price Group, Inc. and Swales Aerospace. He is a frequent presenter to professional groups on issues relating to corporate governance and Sarbanes-Oxley Act compliance. “As a business executive of the State and on the Board of Directors of McCormick, Jim sets himself apart as a man of true integrity, impeccable detail, excellent wisdom and guidance plus an excellent skill to do what is right.  He also has an uncanny ability to do a deep dive on the real meaningful areas and provides the State with excellence in leadership and a willingness to tackle the tough issues.” Robert J. Lawless, President, CEO and Chairman, McCormick and Company, Inc.

Jim Brady spent most of his career with Arthur Andersen, an international accounting and consulting firm; he spent 17 years as Managing Partner of the Long Island and Baltimore offices.  His successor in Baltimore, Bill Crowley, recalls Jim’s unequivocal commitment to the office, people, practice and client services.  These traits were especially useful while Jim was the Secretary of the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development.  “During Jim’s tenure [May 1995 through April 1998] he raised awareness on business development and was successful at making the state more attractive from business and lifestyle perspectives,” said Crowley.

Jim’s commitment has been similarly matched outside of the office. “Jim’s community involvement is second to none; he has been involved in civic groups and nonprofits – he has crossed all lines, wherever there was a need, Jim jumped in and devoted his time and energy,” Crowley stated.  This becomes very apparent when reading the list of Mr. Brady’s activities.
He has served as the Co-Chair of two Maryland gubernatorial transition teams (1994 and 2002) and he is Co-Chair of the Maryland Appellate Judicial Nominating Commission. In addition, he is Chairman of the Frederick County Business Development Advisory Council, a Trustee of Center Stage, a Trustee of Mount Saint Mary’s College, a Board member of Maryland Business for Responsive Government and the Maryland Humanities Council, a member of the Board of Visitors of the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute, a member of the Advisory Council of the Johns Hopkins School of Professional Studies in Business and Education and Chairman of the B & O Railroad Museum Board of Directors. “Jim’s efforts during the rebuilding of the B&O Railroad Museum demonstrate his strength as a leader,” said Courtney Wilson, director of the B&O Railroad Museum.  “He is an incredible mentor, a wonderful counselor, and provides and maintains a high level of trust with everyone he works with.”

The Governor’s Leadership Award winner is nominated by the World Trade Center Institute Board of Directors and selected by the Governor.   Jim Brady is among a select few who have received the award in the past, including 2004 winner Chairman, CEO and President of McCormick and Company, Robert Lawless.

Jim Brady is married to Fran Brady and they have two grown children.
